Summer 2009 Issue Hightlights

The Nekoosa Line- Part III

The Marshfield and Southeastern, 1896-1901

by Jim George

While the existence of the Port Edwards, Centralia and Northern was marked by a series of tumultuous events, by contrast the years of the Marshfield & Southeastern were relatively quiet. There were no shareholder lawsuits, management infighting, real estate condemnations, contractor disputes, devastating fires, newspaper squabbles, or mortgage foreclosures. The M&SE was left free from distraction to face the industry transition that occurred in Wood County in the last half of the 1890s.

The 2719 Gets the Job Done

A Fireman Finds a
Locomotive with Plenty of Guts

BY Max Hofman

For me, the highlight of the National
Railway Historical Society (NRHS) steam trip to Two Harbors, Minnesota was the great performance of the Soo 2719 pulling up-grade from the Two Harbors yard on the
Canadian National Railroad to the start of
the North Shore Scenic Railroad (NSSR) at
Marbles, Minnesota on August 11, 2009.
There is a stiff grade from the former Duluth and Iron Range depot in Two Harbors to the Canadian National mainline switch where the 2719 has to shove in reverse. From there it’s a forward movement up another stiff grade with a curve into Marbles where the NSSR begins the return run to Duluth.....

Modeler's Roundtable

Modeling the Soo Line In O Scale

BY Tom Houle

I have been a Soo fan for as long as I can remember. I was raised in St. Paul and recall the Soo operating there. A move to the Milwaukee area in 1971, where I met other Soo fans, clinched the deal. I began modeling in HO, moved to N scale for awhile, and then finally settled on O scale where there’s plenty of room to do the small details. Here’s what I’ve been up to.

50 Years Ago In The Soo-Liner

Here are selected gleanings from the July-August-September 1958 issue of the Soo-Liner–Editor

Minneapolis
The Mill City
No more beautiful city than Minneapolis exists in the United States. Eleven lakes and 152 attractively landscaped parks, beautiful residences, a hundred miles of boulevard connecting the lakes and the Mississippi River make it so.

Fireman Max Hofman rides the footboard of Soo Class H-3 no. 2719 during a switching move at Two Harbors, MN on October 3, 2009. The preserved Soo 4-6-2 Pacific was the star attraction at the National Railway Historical Society’s national
convention in Duluth in August 2009 and the subject of a short story by fireman Hofman on pages 25 and 26 in this issue of the SOO—Shawn Christie.

Soo Models at the 2009 Prototype Modelers Seminar in Naperville, IL

by Ken Soroos

Sunshine Models, producers of finely detailed resin kits for unique freight cars in HO Scale, has sponsored the Midwest's Prototype Seminar for the past sixteen years. This annual fall four-day event has drawn some of the finest modelers, authors and historians from the United States and Canada to display their models and give presentations to share information and techniques. If you have a chance to attend, you won't be disappointed.
