Soo's home-built RBL boxcars

by Rick Johnson

The Soo Line's Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, shops built hundreds of modern 50-foot boxcars during the 1960s and 1970s. These insulated "bunkerless refrigerators" were the top of the line. Includes colored HO scale renderings.

The Gogebic Range

Part Three: From the Depression to dieselization--the consolidation years

by John Gaertner

This third installment of the Gogebic Range feature takes us from the Great Depression through World War II. A profound turning oint in U.S. History, the depression was felt in nearly every corner of society, and American industry--railroads included--was particularly vulnerable. We'll see how the Depression spawned the fascinating consolidation agreement of Soo Line and Chicago & North Western operations on the Gogebic Range.

Includes a colored map identifying each railroad's pooled trackage in the Northern Wisconsin-Upper Michigan iron range
