Shadows in the Dark by Todd Brown Although the photos above look like they were taken at midnight, they were actually taken at 6 pm CDT in Portage, Wisconsin on December 11, the tenth shortest day of the year in terms of daylight. To make things worse, there were thick clouds all day long and the sun never showed it's face. Fortunately, the days will again start gradually getting longer on December 22. December 21 is the shortest day of the year and marks the winter solstice (first day of winter). The exposures on the photos above averaged about five seconds each at f/9 with an ISO setting of 200.
