Spring Thaw in Portage - March 15, 2003

by Todd Brown

The warmest day of the year brought several railfans to Portage to see what the day had in store. I stayed from 7am until 9pm and counted about 10 trains during the day. A clear blue sky and harsh sunlight made for challenging photography after dawn and before sunset.

More UP power is appearing on CP trains. According to other railfans, some CP power is also showing up on UP trains. Throw in some CEFX and WC units and you can see some pretty colorful motive power combinations.

The melting snow is both a blessing and a curse. Spring and warmer temperatures are on the way, but the snow can create some absolutely beautiful photos. The dead grasses and bare trees will soon be overrun by swarms of leaves, hiding their skeleton and much of their character.

No matter the season, as long as trains are at work in Portage, I will be there.
