Special-run 7-post models 50-foot outside-braced plug door "Fond du Lac" boxcars Produced by Accurail exclusively for the SLHTS using artwork developed and provided by the society. These 50-foot cars, manufactured, custom painted and lettered for the SLHTS by Accurail, Inc., represent 7-post general-purpose cars built by the Soo Line's Fond du Lac shops in 1970. The cars are available in two road numbers each, in several paint schemes. The cars are also available undecorated. The Soo Line’s Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, shops built hundreds of 7-post (8-panel) boxcars from 1964-1979 using components from a number of suppliers. Details changed over the years, including the use of Pullman-Standard or Stanray diagonal-panel and X-panel roofs, various styles of Superior and Youngstown doors, and several distinct paint schemes. For a comprehensive article on these common Soo Line boxcars, see the Spring 1999 issue of the SOO, magazine of the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society. This model is an adaptation of Accurail’s 5000-series 50-foot boxcar model, which provided a relatively accurate starting point with dreadnaught ends and overhanging diagonal-panel roof. The SLHTS commissioned die work for new sides. Because of the nature of the construction of the rest of the Accurail 500-series boxcar model, duplicating the distinctive Soo Line side sill was prohibitively expensive, but the side sill can be easily modified as shown below. The decorated models use the following Floquil PolyScale paints: #414350 Mineral Red; #414113 White; #404091 Signal Red. The cars are priced as follows:
