Soo Line Hopper Car LS&I Hopper Car |
Soo Line 50-ton Hopper Car Produced by Accurail exclusively for the SLHTS using artwork developed and provided by the society. In 1937 Pullman-Standard built a 100-car series of 50-ton two-bay offset-side hppers to the 1934 AAR design for the Wisconsin Central. At that time the W.C. was under long-term lease to the Soo Line and was operated as its Chicago Division. Wisconsin Central ownership of freight cars was indicated by numbers series and a small "W.C." in the upper left-hand corner of the car side. Inside lenght was 33'-0" and capacity was 2191 cubic feet. There were 97 cars from this series still on the roster at the time of the 1961 merger of the Minneapolis St. Paul & Sault Ste. Marie, Wisconsin Central, and Duluth South Shore and Atlantic railroads in the new Soo LIne Railroad Company. The long working lives of these cars make the suitable for wide range of eras for modelers of midwestern railroad freight equipment. Their paint and lettering appearance was essentially unchanged from the time they were built until they were retired. Cars in this series were numbered 66601-66799, odd numbers only, and were painted oxide red with white lettering.
