The Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, MN will be sponsoring its 2nd Annual "Railfan Weekend" on September 5-6-7, 2003. The events include a night photo session, two 1960's era freight and passenger trains, and locomotive line-up.

The weekend kicks off on Friday, September 5 at 9 p.m. with a night photo session featuring vintage diesel locomotives from the Museum's collection. Participants will need to bring a tripod, shutter release and have a camera where the shutter can remain open.

On Saturday, September 6, two trains will depart Duluth at 9 a.m. and operate for photographers over the Museum's North Shore Scenic Railroad between Duluth and Two Harbors, MN. The first train will feature Great Northern NW5 #192 pulling a matching four car Great Northern passenger train. All cars will be painted in GN's traditional Omaha orange and Pullman green streamliner livery.

Following behind the GN train will be a freight or ore train of special interest to Soo Line Historical & Technical Society members. This train will be pulled by Soo Line FP7 2500-A and GP30 700. Bringing up the rear will be Soo steel caboose #1. At some locations, the 2500-A will be "renumbered" using the number boards from a retired Soo F7A, so participants will be able to photograph "two" Soo Line F-units. At each photo location two run-bys will be held, first with the GN passenger train followed by the Soo freight/ore train. The Duluth to Two Harbors route is quite scenic, with a number of tall steel trestles spanning numerous waterways. Please note, this train is intended for photographers and will make frequent stops. It will not return to Duluth until 6:30 pm.

On Sunday, September 7, a "super" locomotive line-up will be conducted at the Museum. In 2002 the line up included 10 diesel locomotives, including three industrial locomotives from various Duluth/Superior industries. For 2003, in addition to locomotives from the Museum collection, we hope to have locomotives from the various Class One railroads which serve the Twin Ports area.

The "all-inclusive" cost for the entire weekend is only $125. Prices for individual events are $35 for the night photo session, $85 for the photographers trains to Two Harbors, and $15 for the locomotive line up. To order tickets you may call the North Shore Scenic Railroad at 1-800-423-1273, Visa, Mastercard and Discover are accepted. You may also send a check or money order to the North Shore Scenic Railroad, 506 West Michigan Street, Duluth, MN 55802.
